Rare antique The House of the Seven Gables book by Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The Scarlet Letter. The Henry Altemus binding of this book is absolutely stunning in a green, pink, red, and gold floral design.
This novel follows a New England family and their ancestral home. The setting for the book was inspired by the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, a gabled house in Salem, Massachusetts, belonging to Hawthorne's cousin Susanna Ingersoll, as well as ancestors of Hawthorne who had played a part in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692.
There is no date on this book, but this binding was usually published in 1900. There is some wear and discoloration to the cover, spine, and pages due to age and one of the intro pages is missing part of the page (pictured). Book measures about 6.5" x 4.2".
